A mentor can play a variety of roles in a young person’s life – a teacher, a friend, an advocate, a coach. At The First Tee, we believe all young people should have access to safe places and caring adults who help them grow socially, athletically, emotionally and academically.
Yet, researchers project 1 in 3 young people will reach adulthood without connecting with a mentor of any kind. We want to help change that statistic.
have a unique opportunity to teach youth valuable life skills while using sports as a platform. We train our coaches to help participants apply the skills they learn on the golf course to life.
Here are five traits to look for in any mentor:
1. A Mentor Empowers youth to make Positive choices.
We all face decisions in life. Some decisions are easy, while others may take careful consideration. Mentors empower youth to consider outcomes and repercussions by using life skills like STAR
to help them in the decision making process.
2. A Mentor Encourages youth to take ownership in their learning.
The best learning comes from doing, not through lectures. Mentors should help youth seek challenging tasks and push themselves to develop new skills. The goal is for young people to become their own best coach – whether on the course, at school, at home or in life.
3. A MENTOR Helps young people develop life skills.
Setting attainable goals, overcoming challenges, learning techniques to manage thoughts and emotions – these are skills youth need to learn and apply to all aspects of life. Caring adults can help young people practice these techniques and provide encouragement.
4. A Mentor Helps young people develop core values.
Mentors should guide youth to understand and develop key values. Our coaches help participants learn The First Tee Nine Core Values
: honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, courtesy and judgment.
5. A mentor Strengthens interpersonal skills and peer relationships.
Mentors can model and encourage youth to appreciate diversity and show respect to oneself, friend, playing partners and fellow competitors.
The Power of Relationships
The First Tee coaches create positive relationships that inspire youth to discover their individual potential. Both teen and alumni of The First Tee said their relationship with their coaches were meaningful and grew stronger over time.
