Community Service Project Leads to More Access to the Game
Goals are dreams you work hard to make come true. Angelica Harris, alumna from The First Tee of Greater New Orleans, knows this truth well.
Her hard work and dedication earned her awards, scholarships and achievements, including her Ace-level certification with The First Tee.
Ace is the highest level of certification at The First Tee. It is achieved when participants create and complete four projects focused on: community service, career, college, and golf. It’s designed to help them develop as individuals and become assets to their communities.
Creating Angelica’s Angels
For Angelica’s community service project, she used the opportunity to bring golf to others who would otherwise not play. Because she was inspired by her younger brother, Jeremiah, who has autism spectrum disorder, she worked hard to develop a curriculum that introduced golf to special needs students.
Angelica’s Angels was created as an after-school golf program at the Chartwell Center where her brother is enrolled. As a result, the school hosted Angelica’s weekly golf lessons. In addition to golf, Angelica introduced The First Tee Nine Core Values to students aged 4-30 with autism spectrum disorder.
“Golf is just a wonderful sport that I think everyone should play because of all the skills and life lessons,” said Angelica, now a freshman in the Olin Business School at Washington University in St. Louis. “That’s what pushed me to start Angelica’s Angels. Having a personal connection to the cause impacts you deeply, too, as well as the cause you’re helping.”
Advancing Through The First Tee
From age 7 through 18, youth progress through our programming levels by demonstrating The First Tee Nine Core Values, life and golf skills as well as passing an assessment. All participants regardless of age start at the PLAYer level. The pinnacle of The First Tee is achieving Ace-level certification.
