Having the support of a Go-To Team is vital in pursuing goals and dealing with challenges. We all need the support of other people both on and off the golf course. One of the life skills youth discover at The First Tee, is how to build a Go-To Team.
BUILDING A GO-TO TEAM

A Go-To person is someone you can turn to for help or support. We often turn to our family or friends when we are facing a problem or are feeling concerned about something. Go-to Teams may be composed of family members, guardians or foster parents, teachers, coaches, friends or other individuals in our community.
When selecting a Go-to Team, we encourage youth to select team members who have some expertise in the area in which they need assistance.
BECOMING A GO-TO PERSON

In addition to teaching youth the value of building a Go-To team, we encourage youth to become a Go-To person for others. Being a Go-to Person is a life skill strategy we can develop, enabling us to not only help others, but also volunteer our time and talents in our communities.
The Value of a Go-to Person:
A Go-To person is one who…
- Respects other people
- Is a good listener
- Is able to feel what others are feeling
- Helps others look for solutions
- Seeks to understand the problem or challenge
The Power of Mentors
Participants don’t go through The First Tee program alone. The power of mentoring is extremely important to us. Our coaches
are often part of a young person’s Go-To Team, not only to help with golf skills, but offer valuable life lessons and mentors as well.
shows many of our participants and alumni consider their coaches to be mentors. Both teens and alumni said their relationship with their coaches grew stronger and more meaningful over time as coaches demonstrated empathy, high – but positive – expectations and advocacy.
