Alumnus Spotlight: Steven Outlaw

Perseverance, confidence and responsibility are just a few of the values youth learn at First Tee, which help set them up for success in life. Through the game of golf, our program aims to prepare youth for success – on the golf course, and in life. Alumni of First Tee continue to demonstrate this impact by sharing their success stories.

Alumnus Steven Outlaw, from First Tee – Lake County, shares his story, traveling the world while pursuing his goals.

Steven’s Story

As part of the initial class of First Tee Scholars, I attended Georgetown College. I majored in political science with a minor in psychology. After college, I enrolled in the PGA, PGM Accelerated Program. After completing two levels of the program, I earned an internship with Troon Golf, the #1 Golf Management Company in the world. As they say, the rest is history.

I have worked with the company nearly 10 years, starting in Arizona. I traveled overseas to work in the Middle East (Abu Dhabi Golf Club). Currently, I am in Malaysia managing The Els Club Teluk Datai (rated #83 in the world by Golf Digest in 2016). These opportunities would not have been possible without First Tee and the core values instilled in me such as perseverance and confidence. Much of what I learned during my time with First Tee I use now to strengthen and empower my team. I am forever grateful and honored to be part of such a great organization. I look forward to the future of First Tee and the path they will pave for the next generation.

Scholars and Success

First Tee Scholars Program was launched in 2003 after Steven gave a speech at the age of 16 during First Tee Network Meeting. Dr. William Crouch, then president of Georgetown College, surprised the audience by spontaneously offering Outlaw a scholarship to his school. Since that time, First Tee has designated 930 teens as First Tee Scholars. Over the past nine years, the home office and chapters awarded $7 million combined in college scholarships to participants.
