The First Tee: Working to Prevent Bullying

prevent bullyingAt The First Tee, we believe in teaching kids and teens the importance of maintaining healthy relationships and effectively handling challenging situations, including bullying and navigating social media. By emphasizing values like respect, courtesy and sportsmanship, The First Tee is equipping young people to respond appropriately when tough situations arise around them. What is Bullying? According to stopbullying.gov, bullying is an unwanted, aggressive behavior among school aged children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose.  But bullying doesn’t just happen in person–it also occurs through social media platforms, text messages and video games. Cyberbullying is an ever-growing form of bullying that takes place through the use of electronic communication. prevent bullyingToday’s youth aren’t able to simply leave their problems at the playground. Instead, their bullies follow them everywhere they go through their phones, tablets and video game consoles. How to Prevent Cyberbullying Through emphasizing the importance of friends as one of The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits kids and teens learn the importance of maintaining healthy relationships and surrounding one’s self with supportive friends. Kids and teens also learn how to effectively handle challenging situations and confrontation, including bullying both on and offline. Talking with kids about how to respond to cyberbullying and how to interact via technology is really important in dealing with bullying. OnGuardOnline provides resources that promote safety, security and responsibility online. Stop. Think. Click., an OnGuardOnline campaign, encourages youth to take the time to actually stop and think before they respond to messages via text or online. prevent bullyingEncourage the young people in your life to tell you immediately if they, or someone they know, is being bullied and/or cyberbullied. Adults working together to promote anti-bullying messages can reinforce that bullying is unacceptable. To find out more about bullying, please visit stopbullying.gov.
