First Tee Response to COVID-19

When we think of First Tee’s mark on the world, what comes to my mind is putting kids and their families first, building confidence despite new challenges, and perseverance. Our values are as important today as ever, and your support is what allows us to continue. It may go without saying, but first and foremost our collective priority is and will remain the safety of our network. From participants and their families to 20,000+ adults who support them throughout First Tee we are committed to putting their safety first. We are proud of our network for being agile, creative and innovative during this unprecedented time. While we have had to cancel or postpone in-person trainings, participant events and work-related travel, we are working from home and have ramped up our support of the network through:
  • Enhanced communications and COVID-19 related webinars
  • Facilitating peer to peer interaction and support through internal channels
  • Creating and providing digital resources to chapters and coaches
  • Sharing uplifting content and updates from around the network through our FacebookInstagram and Twitter
And though we’re focused on chapter support through the current conditions, we’re simultaneously innovating and recalibrating our timeline on important projects like enhanced technology and curriculum. Our goal is to ensure we emerge from this crisis better positioned than ever to empower today’s young people for the future. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time, and for your continued support. We are all in this together, and we have all the confidence we will make it through. Our thoughts are with you. Please stay safe.

PGA of Australia launches First Tee of Australia ahead of the Presidents Cup

MELBOURNE, Australia (10 December 2019)Former PGA TOUR Commissioner and the Vice-Chairman of First Tee Tim Finchem and CEO of PGA of Australia Gavin Kirkman announced today the launch of the First Tee of Australia. Presidents Cup and its Global Partner, Citi, helped launch the efforts through the Citi 44 Million Yard Challenge, an interactive global experience for fans to drive a golf ball around the world while driving toward the opportunity to bring the First Tee chapter to Australia. CLICK HERE to download video, interviews and CLICK HERE for photos from the event. The chapter will be managed by PGA of Australia and will engage with local community groups to reach underserved teenagers. Initially, the program will be offered at three program locations in Melbourne with plans to expand throughout the country in the next several years. Coaches are being provided with formal training to introduce the teens to the First Tee’s curriculum with an emphasis on personal development and understanding of core values and life skills, using golf as the platform. “The chapter will utilise the sport of golf to teach the First Tee’s core values of honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, respect, confidence, responsibility, perseverance, judgement and courtesy,” CEO of PGA of Australia Gavin Kirkman said. “We are proud that our PGA Members have been selected to be the program deliverers of the First Tee in Australia and I look forward to witnessing youth develop under the mentorship of PGA of Australia Professionals.” This will be the sixth international location for First Tee, a youth development organization that seamlessly integrates the game of golf with a life skills curriculum. “Already such an exciting week for golf in Australia with the Presidents Cup’s return to Melbourne, we are thrilled about this formation of a First Tee chapter in Australia and the opportunity to teach the game of golf and its core values to countless youth in the future,” said the First Tee Vice-Chairman Tim Finchem. “We are extremely grateful for Presidents Cup Global Partner Citi, the First Tee and the PGA of Australia for their support in bringing this initiative to life throughout Melbourne and all of Australia.” Leading up to the announcement and this week’s Presidents Cup, fans participated in the Citi 44 Million Yard Challenge to collectively drive a golf ball 44 million yards – the length it takes to circle the globe – for the 2019 Presidents Cup, while driving towards the launch of the First Tee of Australia. The Challenge included an interactive web-based game, a mobile game and a simulator that was placed throughout Australia and New York. “Citi is proud to be the presenting sponsor of the First Tee chapter in Australia,” said Guy Matthews, Head of Corporate Affairs for Citi Australia and New Zealand. “We see this is as a legacy of our partnership with the Presidents Cup here in Melbourne. The values of the First Tee are well-aligned with our philanthropic commitments to support young people as they gain the skills to succeed in their transition from education to employment.” The launch featured a variety of First Tee golf activities at Victoria Golf Club being demonstrated by 2019 Women’s PGA Champion Hannah Green, two-time Presidents Cup member Nick O’Hern and former AFL footballer and avid golfer Brendon Goddard. “The First Tee program is great and allows the game of golf to be the vehicle to instill morals into young people like respect and sportsmanship that are so valuable in day-to-day life,” said Brendon Goddard. “The greatest coaches I have had in football are the ones that not only made me a better footballer, but a better person.” “When I grew up playing I learned a lot about myself being at the golf club, learning values from those around me,” said Hannah Green. “I think that First Tee is a great program aimed at highlighting these life values. I think it’s great that First Tee is coming to Australia.” First Tee has been in existence for 22 years, primarily in the United States, and has grown to approximately 150 chapters and more than 1,200 program locations including Australia, Canada, Japan, Korea, Mexico and Morocco. USGA Awards $15,000 in Grant Funding to Local First Tee Chapters

Pebble Beach, Calif. (June 12, 2019) – USGA CEO Mike Davis, Vice Chairman of the First Tee Board and former PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem, and First Tee President Greg McLaughlin came together today at the 119th U.S. Open Championship at Pebble Beach to recognize USGA’s longstanding commitment bringing young people to the game through the First Tee. The three leaders were joined by two participants from First Tee for a friendly competition in the Junior Experience Featuring the First Tee, an interactive area for kids in families located with this year’s U.S. Open’s Fan Central. Playing in a putting competition, all five helped to earn grant money (courtesy of USGA) for the 10 local First Tee chapters in Northern California (Central Coast, Central Valley, Contra Costa, Fresno, Greater Sacramento, Monterey County, San Francisco, San Joaquin, Silicon Valley and the Tri-Valley). Davis, Finchem and McLaughlin each sunk their putts to win the competition, splitting the $7,000 between Central Coast, Central Valley, Contra Costa, Fresno, Sacramento and San Francisco. The remaining four remaining chapters each received $1,000, for a total of $15,000 distributed in USGA-funded grants. Since First Tee’s inception in 1997, USGA has provided more than $26 million in grants to the organization. The USGA and First Tee debuted the Junior Experience featuring First Tee this week at the U.S. Open to help connect youth attending to the excitement and values associated with golf and First Tee programs offered throughout the country. Highlights of the immersive experience include First Tee’s hands-on putting green, chipping challenge, golf simulator, large-scale coloring wall, photo booth and more. The Junior Experience also includes activations with LPGA-USGA Girls Golf and WGT/Top Dog ESports. “We are proud to be a part of the fan experience at the 119th U.S. Open Championship, ensuring that kids and families have a great time and opening the doors for them to get involved in the game at one of our 150 chapters nationwide,” said McLaughlin. “We are thankful for USGA’s longstanding commitment to our mission, our chapters and for providing us the ability to introduce golf and the Nine Core Values to more young people each year.” With the USGA’s support, First Tee’s 10 northern California chapters are reaching more than 35,000 young people annually at more than 120 golf program locations, with support from 2,700 volunteers. Additionally, First Tee has been introduced to more than 750 schools and youth centers reaching thousands of additional kids throughout the state. To learn more, visit www.firsttee.org. Charles Schwab donates $5 Million to Support First Tee in Texas

“Charles Schwab Challenge Grant” Funds Nine State Chapters

Fort Worth, TX (May 22, 2019) – First Tee, a youth development organization dedicated to helping young people build character through the game of golf, will expand its programs and deepen its impact on young people in Texas thanks to a challenge grant provided by Charles Schwab. The $5 million donation will also support further development of a First Tee College Scholarship program.

The announcement was made today by Charles R. Schwab and PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan during the Charles Schwab Challenge, the PGA TOUR’s longstanding tournament at Colonial Country Club in Ft. Worth, Texas.

“We’re very proud to be able to help First Tee expand its reach and impact here in Texas – a major home for Schwab,” Mr. Schwab said.  “Golf has so much to offer young people: it requires discipline, is a highly social sport, and is a passion you carry with you for a lifetime. Like investing, mastering the game requires patience, strategic thinking, and the flexibility to adjust as circumstances and the lay of the land require.”

Through the Charles Schwab Challenge Grant, First Tee’s nine Texas chapters will have the opportunity to further the mission in their communities through a match of funds over the next three years. First Tee currently serves young people through chapters in Austin, Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Greater Tyler, Houston, Piney Woods, San Antonio and most recently expanding in to West Texas (Midland).

“Thanks to sponsors like Charles Schwab, Texas golf fans and those watching around the world are enjoying the continuation of a vibrant and important tournament on the PGA TOUR calendar, the Charles Schwab Challenge,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “Furthermore, Mr. Schwab’s investment in First Tee is a shining example of the long-lasting charitable impact of golf as we expand programs that are helping young people become leaders in their communities and future fans of the game.”

First Tee’s nine Texas chapters are reaching more than 10,000 young people annually at more than 70 golf program locations, with support from 2,500 volunteers. Additionally, First Tee has been introduced to more than 1,000 schools and youth centers reaching thousands of additional kids throughout the state.

“Charles Schwab’s commitment to First Tee in Texas will have a significant impact on our chapters and their ability to reach young people for years to come,” said First Tee President Greg McLaughlin. “This support will allow us to expand our reach and impact, engaging young people in programs that will yield tangible academic and social benefits. We are incredibly grateful for the support.”

“We’d like to also acknowledge the compelling work and generosity of contributions of Charles Schwab & Co.’s employees in supporting First Tee of Fort Worth/Dallas. Their support and volunteerism underscored the success of our 2019 Charles Schwab Challenge Youth Festival hosted by First Tee of Fort Worth in partnership with Colonial Country Club, Charles Schwab & Co. and Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Tarrant County,” said First Tee of Fort Worth Executive Director Kevin Long. “Together, we welcomed hundreds of area children for an unforgettable day of golf and financial wellness education.”

Since 2003, First Tee has provided more than $10.6 million in scholarships to help fund participants’ education. First Tee is expending the program as a way to help more young people pursue their dreams through higher education.
